Regions to challenge NCR's rule

Delegates from different regions in the country are now in Lingayen, Pangasinan, ready to compete for the gold, silver, and bronze medals at stake in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa.

Negros Occidental athletes left for the national games Sunday afternoon, inspired by the message of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. to strive harder and set their mind towards the goal of conquering the Palarong Pambansa title.

During the turn over of incentives to the WVRAA medalists at the Capitol last month, the governor said he will double the amount for athletes who will win the gold in Lingayen.

With the enthusiasm, skills, and effort of the athletes and coaches, he expressed optimism that the Negros Occ. athletes will help the delegation from Western Visayas capture the elusive overall Palaro championship.

Also eyeing the overall title are the other regions whose athletes have started their respective trainings and preparations in different venues in Lingayen.

In a statement released to the wires, Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro said this year's Palaro promises to be exciting since the regions have been preparing to dominate the games and to grab the championship from the NCR.

The NCR athletes have been dominating the Palaro for several years. Western Visayas is a force to reckon with in athletics and has been a perennial runner-up to NCR.

Expected to grab medals in taekwondo are Regions I, XII and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), while it will be a close competition for Regions I and II in gymnastics.

Major players in volleyball are Regions I, III, VI, XII, while Regions I, II, and IV-A are expected to contest the gold in swimming competition.

Regions II, III, IV-B, VI and XI will be aiming for the gold in baseball, while football will be the turf of Region VI and Regions II.

Another possible golden finish for Region VI will be in softball, although Regions II, and XI are expected to put up a tough challenge. Sepak takraw gold can be a toss between Regions IV-B and VIII.

In arnis, Palaro observers anticipate a rematch of last year's championship between Regions XI and XII, while Regions IV-A and XI will be shooting for the gold in basketball championship, while Region V and XII are the regions to beat in archery.*NAB
