DEPED UNVEILS CALENDAR

School year 2012–2013 for public elementary and secondary schools nationwide will start on June 4 and will end March 22, 2013, comprising 200 school days, with 180 considered non-negotiable student-teacher contact time, a press release from Department of Education said.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said yesterday that the department came out with a new school calendar, under DepEd Order 26-2012, that synchronizes events and teaching–learning activities, to optimize the use of the prescribed 200 school days.

Private schools, on the other hand, may deviate from the calendar, but are enjoined not to start earlier than June 4 and not later than end of August. Any deviation from DepEd Order 26 should be relayed to the department, the press release added.

CENRO warns of legal action
vs. maltreatment of sea turtles

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Community Environment and Natural Resources officer of Negros Oriental has ordered another investigation of the reported inhumane conditions of green sea turtles in a facility in Zamboanguita town.

Mario Aragon said probe will determine whether the operators of the facility, that has been granted a Certificate of Wildlife Registration for the turtles, have complied with earlier recommendations to improve the living conditions of the endangered species.

Oscar Mongcopa, chief of the CENRO II Protected Areas and Wildlife Sector,  yesterday went to the Oceanarium in Zamboanguita, to check on reports that green turtles (Chelonia mydas), are subjected to harsh conditions.

Close to 2,000 applicants
register in jobs fair: DOLE
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Department of Labor and Employment Tripartite Industrial Peace Council recorded 1,784 applicants in the jobs fair held in Dumaguete City Tuesday.

Of this, 458 applied through online registration. The TIPC added that 804 qualified and were referred to prospective employers, while 797 were interviewed at the jobs fair held in a mall in the city.

Vivencio Lagahid, Senior Labor Employment officer, said only two were hired on-the-spot, as employment abroad still requires a final interview, medical check-up and additional requirements. For local employment, most of the employers are from the call center industry that requires additional screening for the applicants.
