SIFI medical mission
in DSB benefits 448

The Sugar Industry Foundation Inc. said that about 448 sugar workers from haciendas, small planters and their families, in Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, benefited from its 112th medical dental mission held at the Bunga Elementary School in DSB recently, a press release from the organization said.

Of the total, 380 availed of free medical consultations and medicines, 68 had dental extractions, and more than 200 children and adults were fed, the press release also said.

Prevalent illnesses discovered were upper respiratory tract infection, abdominal pain, severe cough and colds, fever and first degree malnutrition among children, hypertension, hyperacidity, LBM, gastritis, arthritis and anemia for adults, the press release added.

The team was headed by Neolita Alminaza, program coordinator of SIFI, and assisted by the C-Prime Corporation, led by Honeylen Villarosa; the barangay council of Bunga, headed by Capt. Romulo Prudente; and the Bunga Elementary School, led by principal Nery Dulaca.

Doctors who joined the mission were Milagros Amarra, Rochelle Calleja, Dan Dueñas, Terry Gasataya and Ester Leong, and dentists Judith Fernandez and Carmela Paredes, the press release also said.*

‘Text2Teach’ MOA signed

A memorandum of agreement to implement the “Text2Teach” program in Silay City, Negros Occidental, was signed between the Schools Division, Ayala Foundation Inc., and the local government yesterday, a press release from the city said.

The program aims to improve the performance of the students through the use of mobile phones, where teachers and trainors can access and download videos that can be used for interactive teaching in classrooms, by connecting the phone to a TV for group viewing, making learning more exciting and fun for the students,” Dino Rey Abellanosa, manager of the Education and Leadership Development of Ayala, said in the press release.

He added that Silay is the first local government in the Visayas to sign the MOA, which will cover 12 public elementary schools in the city, with grades five and six students as beneficiaries, the press release also said.

The agreement was signed between Abellanosa, Schools Division OIC superintendent Neri Anne Alibuyog, and Silay Jose Montelibano, the press release added.*

Environment,
astrophysics seminar set

A seminar workshop on environment and astrophysics, initiated by the College of Arts and Sciences of West Negros University, in partnership with the University of Asia and the Pacific, will be conducted today and tomorrow, at the GGA-Audio Visual Center of WNU, a press release from the school said.

It will be participated in by teaching professionals and researchers in science all over the country, including teachers in Bacolod City, and aims to connect with schools and universities on research, instructional improvement and shared expertise in the field, the press release added.

Meanwhile, a nursing graduate of WNU is representing Western Visayas in the national finals of the 50th search for the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines in Metro Manila, its press release said.

Marlie Joie Bombita was selected by the 2012 TOSP Regional Executive Committee to be one of the representatives of the region in the finals.

TOSP is an awards and formation program that seeks to galvanize the youth into nation building through exemplary academic performance, social involvement, and inspiring leadership services to their school, local communities, and the country, the press release added.*
