Arguelles registers twin victories
in HEAD Jr. Tennis – Bacolod leg

After a dominating performance in Cebu and placing runner-up in Dumaguete, Fernando Arguelles captured two titles s in the Smart HEAD Junior Tennis Satellite Circuit 2012 - Bacolod leg at Noah’s Haven Tennis Club in Brgy. Montevista yesterday.

Playing at top-notch form, the University of St. La Salle-Integrated School incoming sophomore beat in less than an hour Francis Sotto of San Carlos City (6-1, 6-0) to win the title in 14-Under singles.

The booked his second crown in the competition by teaming up with Davao’s Cyrin Martinez in the 14-Under doubles, where the tandem prevailed over Reynan Nahusay and Xynel Datorin, 6-3.

“It feels great to win two championships and I’ll try to play better when the series goes to Iloilo next week,” Arguelles said.

To remain in top form, he said he has been working out everyday and part of his routine during schools days was to wake up as early as 4:30 a.m. to start practicing on his strokes at the nearby tennis court.

As the only child of Philippine Tennis Association regional vice president Bong Arguelles and wife Ruth, Fernando grew up loving the sports his father taught him. He is a member of the USLS-IS junior tennis team that represents the NOPSSCEA in the Negros Occidental provincial meet.

“My long-term goal is to gain a tennis scholarship abroad and improve my game,” Fernando said, adding that he is looking forward to a possible slot in the national juniors team training pool.

Taking his game further in the HEAD Junior Tennis series, the young Arguelles joined the 16-Under singles and placed first runner-up to Ralp Sevilla, 6-3, 6-3.

As of now, he said he will focus his game in the 14-Under and hopes to win more championships.*NAB
