Makawiwili dancers
3rd in ‘Sayaw Pinoy’

The Makawiwili Dance Troupe of the Philippine Normal University in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, won third place in the Sayaw Pinoy 2012 national dance competition folk dance category, that was held in Manila, recently, a press release from the Capitol said.

The MDT, grand champion of the Panaad sa Negros Festival folk dance competition for 2011 and 2012, is composed of Ian George Acumabig, Jayson Corbita, Ronard Nasis, Ferjohn Rodriguez, Melvan Villa, Anne Marie Drua, Bena Mae Margario, Scharra Mar Tangarorang, Charmaine Ladores and Jaimica Yago, the press release also said.

The dance troupe, under the tutelage of Randyll Villones, performed “Escopiton Malandog” in the competition organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts-National Committee on Dance, headed by Shirley Halili-Cruz.

First place was the Irong-Irong Dance Troupe of West Visayas State University, Iloilo province; and second was the Palawan State University Dance Troupe, the press release said.

The activity was aimed at motivating artistic excellence, and teaching emotional fitness through teamwork, dependability, commitment, sportsmanship, discipline and creativity, the press release added.*

Karaoke world contest set

Amateur singing champions in Bacolod City are invited to join the 2012 Karaoke World Championship from November 27 to December 2 in Lappeenranta, Finland, a press release from the city said.

In her letter to Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Ma. Cristina LLamo, president of the Karaoke World Championships–Philippines, extended her invitation for Bacoleños to join the contest, and said that amateur singing champions can now do better than before.

More than 30 countries are participating in the contest that was started by Oy KWC Organization Ltd., in Finland in 2003, the press release said.

The Philippines competed for the first time last year when the contest was held in Killarney, Ireland, and the KWC Philippine champions bagged the first and third runners-up titles in the male and female series, the press release also said.

Only champions from local amateur singing contests from 2010 to May 2012 will be allowed to join the Philippine trials. They should be Filipino citizens, 18 years old and above by May 31, and eligible to travel outside the country, the press release said.
