2012 PALARONG PAMBANSA
5 gold medals for WV in opening day,
Cabanyog sets new record in shot put

Western Visayas grabbed five gold medals to show dominance in athletics as competition in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa started yesterday at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Negrenses Richee Joy Cabanyog made it sweeter for Region VI as he snatched the gold in secondary boys shot put in record-breaking fashion.

Cabanyog hurled the iron ball to a distance of 13.90 meters to erase the 13.19m mark set by Arthur Enon of Western Mindanao during the 1990 Palaro in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Sabillo retains OPBF title

Using his power and speed, Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo of Toboso, Negros Occidental knocked down in the 7th round challenger Jonathan Refugio of Malaybalay-Bukidnon to retain his Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation mini-flyweight title, Friday night at the La Proa Ballroom of L’ Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City.

Unleashing a combination of punches targeting Refugio’s mid-section, the undefeated Sabillo registered the 8th TKO in his boxing career and improved his record to 18 victories.

Pummeling the Bukidnon challenger into submission in the 7th round, Sabillo had his foe kneeling on the canvass with two minutes and 36 seconds in the round, prompting international referee Samson Libres to give him the mandatory 8-count.

B-MEG wins PBA crown

Denzel Bowles had his name etched in B-Meg’s history books last night as he converted two pressure-paced free throws to force an over time then scored 10 points in the extra period to give his team a 90-84 victory against Talk N Text to clinch in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup crown at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last night.

All praises for his 23-year-old import, B-Meg coach Tim Cone said Bowles is “too young to know”, noting the relaxed mood of the player despite the 39 points and 21 rebounds he put in last night.

The 4-3 win over the defending champion was the ninth championship in all for the franchise formerly known as Purefoods and the 14th overall for Cone, who took over just before the season started.
