‘Detainee tries to end life’

A detainee reportedly attempted to commit suicide by strangulating himself with a towel at the restroom of Police Station 9 in Brgy. Sum-ag, Bacolod City, Saturday, Chief Insp. Placido Gentoleo, Station 9 commander, said yesterday.

He identified the detainee as Roberto Sorilla Jr., 20, of Purok Medalla Milagrosa in Brgy. Sum-ag. He said Sorilla asked for permission to go to the restroom from Police Officer 2 Eman Anacleto, case investigator.

Gentoleo added that Anacleto was forced to open the door when Sorilla did not come out of the restroom after five minutes, and saw the detainee dangling from the window grill with a white towel around his neck. Investigation showed that Sorilla tore the towel into four strips, knotted them and used it to strangulate himself.

Sorilla was given first aid by the emergency response unit of Brgy. Sum-ag and later rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he is now confined.

Sorilla was apprehended while he was attending a wake in Purok Pag-asa, Brgy. Sum-ag, at about 11 p.m. Friday, on the strength of an arrest warrant for murder issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 44 Judge Franklin Demonteverde, who denied him bail.

Police records show that Sorilla stabbed to death truck driver Jimmy Doblar, 34, of Brgy. Bacong in Bago City, Negros Occidental, on November 11, 2011, Anacleto said.*APN
