Guv to share Neg. Occ. Experience
at Visayas-wide organic conference

Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. will share the Negros Occidental experience in organic agriculture at the Visayas-Wide Awareness Conference on Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 for Local Chief Executives tomorrow at the Bacolod Pavillon in Bacolod City,

Armi Benedicto, provincial focal person on organic agriculture, said yesterday that governors and mayors from Regions VI, VII, and VIII will attend the seminar that will focus on Republic Act 10068 or the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010.

It will also focus on the local implementation of the law and local government units must have programs on organic farming.

Other speakers will share their experiences in organic agriculture are Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur Mayor Nacianceno Pacalioga, Jr., Tanay, Rizal Municipal Agriculturist Romeo Cruz, and National Organic Agriculture Board representatives of small farmers and the private sector Ray Pedroso, and Edwin Lopze of Alter Trade-Negros.

Benedicto also said the province is considered the leading local government unit in the implementation of RA 10068.

She recalled that the governors of Negros Occidental (the late Joseph Marañon) and Negros Oriental (George Arnaiz) signed a memorandum of agreement in 2005 making the Negros Island the “Organic Island” of the country.

The participants will also visit May’s Organic Garden and Restaurant and the Organic Market and Restaurant of the province, Benedicto added.

The seminar is in cooperation with the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Department of Agriculture-VI. *LTG
