5,890 applying for GSIS
educational loan program

The Government Service Insurance System is processing about 5,890 applications under the Educational Assistance Loan Program for active members in Negros Oriental.

Cecilia Tenaja, GSIS acting manager, said that as of May 12, the local office has processed 3,311 loan applications with amounts to be borrowed reaching P13,244,000.

Tenaja said she expects that 85 percent of the more than 22,000 GSIS members in the province will avail of the loan program at P4,000 for each member, payable in five years at six percent interest per annum.

Army releases man
captured in encounter

A suspected member of the New People’s Army was released from military custody yesterday, two days after the encounter in Brgy. Bucalan, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, that claimed the lives of two suspected rebel assassins and an Army soldier.

Lt. Col. Wilfredo Isaac, 11th Infantry Battalion commander, yesterday said they released Ronnel Josalita, who was captured after the encounter, for lack of evidence to link him to the NPA.

Josalita, however, had revealed that the slain Argie Villasan and Elmer Canete, were NPA rebels, Isaac said..

Soil science
conference ongoing

The College of Agriculture of Silliman University is spearheading the 15th Philippine Society of Soil Science and Technology annual conference, today until May 18, on the theme “Soil Science in Nation Building”, a press release from the school said.

The conference will gather policymakers and PSSST members representing the academe, government and the private sector, to learn about prevailing issues and developments in soil utilization and management.

Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority director Norlito Gicana will be the keynote speaker, while Dr. Kazuyuki Inubushi, of Chiba University in Japan, and Dr. Somchai Anusontpornperm, of Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand, will lead the plenary talks, the press release also said.
