Guns-for-hire eyed in slay
of cock farm owner: police

Guns-for-hire are being eyed as suspects in the shooting to death of a cock farm owner in Brgy. Bata, Bacolod City, at about 1 p.m. Friday, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, city police director, said yesterday.

Reynaldo Esguerra, of San Pablo City, Laguna, and a temporary resident of Silay City, Negros Occidental, owned a cock farm in Brgy. Taloc, Bago City, and was also into the buko pie making business, Station 3 chief, Senior Insp. Jose Mulleta, said.

Investigation showed that a man interested in buying a cock contacted Esguerra on his cellular phone between 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, and they agreed to meet in a mall.

The victim and his helper, whose name the police did not disclose, arrived at the mall at about 12:30 a.m., and were picked up on a motorcycle going to Brgy. Bata, Mulleta said.

Esguerra was about to alight from the motorcycle after they arrived at Purok Tumpok, at about 1 p.m., when the supposed buyer, who was at the waiting shed, shot and hit Esguerra in the jaw, Mulleta also said.

The victim was killed on the spot, while the gunman pushed the victim’s helper off the motorcycle and used it to escape, the police said.

De la Paz said personal grudge is being eyed as motive for the shooting, adding they have identified the suspects but cannot give other details in order not to hamper police investigation.*APN
