Dumaguete City has been recognized as a model of good governance by Government Watch, for engaging its residents to monitor programs and projects to promote transparency and accountability, a press release from the Philippine Information Agency said.
In an event organized by the Ateneo School of Government in Manila, Dumaguete was awarded “for engaging the public in ensuring the right quality and quantity of drugs provided to the citizens at the barangay level”, the press release added.
Naga City was lauded for engaging the public to monitor the efficiency of education services like textbooks, school furniture, school buildings, teachers’ provisions and students’ welfare programs; Puerto Princesa City for community-based sustainable tourism; Samal City for ensuring the balance between economic development and environmental protection; San Miguel in Bohol on rice production program; and Southern Leyte for monitoring infrastructure projects, the press release also said.
These LGUs applied the Government Watch Social Accountability Model, where both the citizens and government officials watch or monitor government processes. The model was created by Ateneo in response to reports of massive public corruption and inefficiency in 2000, the press release said.
Program volunteers and officials of the LGUs received plaques of recognition from the school and the European Commission of the Philippines, that funded the programs through the Department of Interior and Local Government, the press release added.*
