Gumban slay suspects probed
for killing of call center agent

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

The assailants of Dr. Andres Gumban are also being investigated for the brutal killing of a call center agent in a pension house at Araneta Street, Bacolod City, in September last year, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, City Police Director, said yesterday.

De la Paz said the manner in which Gumban was killed was similar to the way Ian Sherwin Sandoval, 34, who was a Transcom Call Center employee, was murdered.

Sandoval sustained at least 16 stab wounds when his body was found in a room

in the Ester Pension House by one of its employees on September 18 last year.

De la Paz ordered Chief Insp. Ulysses Ortiz, head of the City Police’s Investigation branch, to coordinate with Police Station 1 commander Chief Insp. Adonis Rosales in investigating the possible link of Fof Pascual, 18, of Brgy. Tadlong, Sagay City and the 16-year-old minor from Cadiz City to the killing of Sandoval.

Ortiz, who was the station commander of Police precinct 1 when the killing of Sandoval happened, said they will coordinate with the employees of the pension house, especially the receptionist, to identify the suspects.

De la Paz said that Pascual admitted that they are “callboys” and the experiences they had may have led them to the brutal killing of Gumban. As to whether someone hired the suspects to kill Gumban because they videotaped the doctor’s killing, the police are yet to investigate it, he added.

A 5-minute and 18 seconds video taken through the cellular phone of the 16-year-old that showed the murder of Gumban was released to the media by De la Paz on Tuesday.

Jordan Reyes, a friend of Gumban said, in an interview over ABS-CBN, that it was very difficult to watch the video showing Gumban struggling and in pain. However, it is good that the police released it, to refute the allegations of the suspects that they killed the doctor because he made sexual advances on one of them, Reyes added.

Gumban met the 16-year-old on Facebook in March and had invited him in his house at DC 2 Regent Pearl Homes Subdivision in Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod together with Pascual on Thursday last week.

National Bureau of Investigation-Bacolod agent-in-charge, Fernando Levin, advised Facebook and Twitter users to be careful about the people they meet in these social media sites.

Based on the records of the national Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the number of cyber crime incidents in the country are rising.

Lavin said that suspects could easily get away with their deeds as they usually do not put real information about themselves in their social media accounts. He added that there is also no law on cyber crimes in the Philippines making it difficult to prosecute the suspects.*APN
