Earthquake shakes south

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake was felt 013km north and 80° west of Hinoba-an town in Negros Occidental at 1:29 p.m. yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Siesmology reported.

The quake was felt at intensity four in Hinobaan and intensity three in Sipalay City but no damage was reported, a PHIVOLCS report said.

It was tectonic in origin.

Hinobaan Mayor Ma. Teresa Bilbao said the epicenter was near Barangay 1 of her town and residents felt three strong, but brief shakes.

PHIVOLCS said an intensity 4 quake is moderately strong and felt generally by people indoors and some people outdoors.

Light sleepers are awakened and vibration is felt like the passing of a heavy truck, it added.

An intensity 3 quake is weak, is felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings and vibration is like the passing of a light truck, it added.

On Wednesday, two earthquakes hit Negros Oriental.

Canlaon City was hit by a magnitude 3.1 earthquake at 10:56 p.m., and Guihulngan by a 3.2 magnitude tremor at 4:21 p.m. Wednesday, PHIVOLCS reported.*CPG
