Septuagenarian arrested
for illegal gun possession

A 79-year-old man was arrested by the police, allegedly for illegal possession of firearms in Brgy. Rizal, Silay City, Negros Occidental, Friday.

Supt. Rosauro Francisco, Silay police chief, said yesterday that the suspect, identified as Rodolfo Mansanares, was caught in possession of a homemade .38 caliber revolver with 11 live ammunition, and an empty shell, as well as two bullets for a 12-gauge shotgun.

Mansanares is now detained at the lockup cell of the Silay City Police Station.

Three more firearms, including a 357 magnum and a 22 caliber revolvers, as well as a homemade shotgun, were also recovered by the police in Murcia and Candoni last May 17, police records also show.

The campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms, especially in the 5th district of Negros Occidental, was intensified by the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, because of the June 2 special election in the area.

Since the 45-day election period started April 18, not a single violation for the Comelec gun ban has been recorded by the police as of yesterday, in the towns of Moises Padilla, La Castellana, Isabela, Binalbagan, Hinigaran and Himamaylan City, that comprise the 5th District.*GPB
