Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said the cash incentive for the medalists in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa will be released soon, adding that Negros Occidental’s chance of hosting the games is good.

“There is a big chance of winning the bid, and small chance of losing,” the governor said.

While he was cheering on the Western Visayas contingent to wrest the overall championship from the National Capital Region before the games, Marañon said he was contented with the first runner-up finish for Region VI.

He pointed out that the NCR remains a powerhouse in swimming and gymnastics. The athletes from the Big City also won the gold in elementary boys’ athletics, badminton girls, basketball, chess boys, gymnastics, swimming boys and girls, tennis girls, and volleyball boys.

In secondary competition, the NCR delegation topped archery girls, athletics girls, baseball, basketball boys, chess boys, football, gymnastics, swimming boys and girls, and volleyball boys and girls.

Western Visayas, on the other hand, won the gold in elementary boys and girls, arnis, athletics girls, boxing, softball, and taekwondo boys and secondary arnis boys and girls, basketball girls, softball, and table tennis girls.

Region VI got a silver in elementary athletics boys, sipa, table tennis boys and girls, volleyball girls, secondary arnis boys, athletics girls, table tennis boys; and a bronze medal in elementary basketball, chess girls, volleyball boys; and secondary badminton boys and girls, basketball boys, sepak takraw, swimming girls, taekwondo girls, and volleyball girls.

The governor said that gold medalists will get P10,000 while the silver medalist will receive P5,000 and the bronze winners, P3,000.

For team events, the provincial government will give P50,000 for the first placers, P30,000 for the first runner-up, and 10,000 for the second runner-up.

Meanwhile, sports leaders in the province are confident that Negros Occidental will win in its bid to host next year’s Palarong Pambansa.

Earlier, Executive Assistant to the Governor Angel Verdeflor said Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia, a Negrense, assured the province of his support in the bidding.

To boost the province’s bid to host the games, the provincial government is developing the Paglaum Sports Complex facilities where games such as volleyball, softball, and football can be played.

The Panaad Park and Sports Stadium will remain as the main venue of the games, should Negros Occidental wins the bid against Cebu City and Dumaguete.*NAB
