Mother strangles
2 daughters to death
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

A 24-year-old mother confessed to the killing of her two minor children Monday at a sugarcane field in Brgy. Calapi, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, police said.

A day after, the suspect identified as Mira Lacson, 24, was arrested by the police. She is now detained at the Hinigaran Police Station, pending the filing of two counts of parricide charges, Police Officer 3 Ma. Victorina Oychocde, local police Women’s and Children Complaint Desk chief, said.

Oychocde said Lacson told police investigators that she drowned the two children, both girls, aged 1 and 3 years old, in a canal at about 1 p.m. of May 21.

Seven hours later, barangay tanods led by kagawad Edwin Estorninos discovered the bodies of the two minors, in a sugarcane field, after searching the area.

Oychocde said that based on the result of the autopsy conducted by Dr. Edgar Acosta of the Hinigaran Municipal Health Office, the two children died of suffocation, bolstering allegations that they may have been strangled to death.

Before the incident, Lacson claimed, she was always berated by her mother for being a happy-go-lucky person, and scolded for neglecting her two children, police investigations show.

The victims reportedly had different fathers.

To end speculations that she might get pregnant again, as she was frequently seen in the company of bystanders, Lacson said she decided to end everything, police investigations also showed.

The father of the suspect, whose identity was not available, said in an interview with MBC Aksyon Radyo, that his daughter was frequently hanging out with bystanders suspected to be using prohibited drugs, and who may have molested her.

He said that up to this time, he cannot believe that his daughter could afford to kill her children, adding that he cannot determine yet if she is suffering from a mental illness.

There are reports that the suspect may have been experiencing “postpartum depression”, that occurs to women for three months, or up to a year, after she has given birth.*GPB
