Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, former Dean of the College of Law of San Sebastian College Manila, was conferred the Doctor of Laws degree, (honoris causa), yesterday by university president Rev. Fr. Dionisio C. Cachero at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod City, during the celebration of UNO-R’s 50th anniversary.
The hooding and capping of Rodriguez was administered by Rev. Fr. Joel A. Alve, OAR, vice president for Academics who was assisted by John Paolo Villasor, Dean of the School of Law.
Rodriguez was joined by his wife Fenina Tiukinhoy and only daughter, Regine Beatrice, during his acceptance of the conferment.
He was awarded as the Most Outstanding Alumnus by De La Salle university in 1999, and by Xavier University in 2002. He was the youngest Dean of the College of Law of SSCR in 1990.
During the term of by former President Joseph Estrada, he was commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration.
He was elected representative of the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro in the 14th Congress where he registered a perfect attendance.
He also ranked 2nd among 268 congressmen on the most number of bills and resolutions filed at 554 of which 53 had become Republic Acts. He was re-elected on May 10, 2010 with a margin of 100,000 votes over his opponent.
He was also a former vice governor and a multi-awarded congressman.
