Activities for
environment month set

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 7 and the Negros Oriental government will spearhead the Environment Month celebration next week with a series of activities on the theme “Green Economy: Does it include you?”, a government press release said.

A program during the flag-raising ceremony at the Provincial Capitol will kick off the event on June 4, with Gov. Roel Degamo and Provincial Environment and Natural Resources officer Eduardo Inting as guest speakers.

Public and private schools are also expected to initiate school-based activities such as “Oplan Linis” to clean up campuses in preparation for the opening of classes.

DENR-7 regional executive director Maximo Dichoso, Degamo, and Dumaguete Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria will be the guest panelists in the “Kapihan sa PIA” forum to tackle environmental issues and concerns on June 6, the press release said.

More than a hundred participants have been invited to the Kapihan, among them the chairpersons of the Environment Committee and Environment and Natural Resources offices of local government units, provincial environment desk officers of the Philippine National Police, religious groups, the academe, media, environmental advocate-NGOs and government agencies.

On June 16, Dumaguete, through its ENRO, will hold a citywide clean-up activity; while the Foundation University will organize a big fun run and walk for the environment on June 23.

The fun run that will involve the students and the barangays, will be led by the Metro Dumaguete Road Runners Club. Participants will be assigned places where they can pick up or gather trash and plastics to promote environmental consciousness, the press release said.

An “Environment Summit for a Green Economy”, meanwhile, is scheduled on June 26 with Secretary Ramon Paje of DENR as the keynote speaker, and will be participated in by groups of fishermen, farmers, barangay population development officers and ENROs province-wide, the press release added.*
