Nietes ready to knock
down Salguero

It will be a tougher, meaner Donnie Nietes who will take on Mexican Felipe Salguero to defend his WBO light flyweight crown this Saturday at the Resorts World Manila Newport Performing Arts Theater.

Nietes told the DAILY STAR yesterday that he is not only ready to protect his world boxing title, but he will unleash the sting of his punches on the challenger from Mexico.

“I will go up the ring on Saturday ready for the 12-round fight but if I get the chance, I will knock him down,” Nietes said in the vernacular.

Double-gold for Hulleza in
POC-PSC Nat’l Games

Sixteen-year-old Ryan Hulleza continued to raise the banner of Himamaylan City higher at the POC-PSC National Games in Dumaguete City as he captured his second gold medal in the 3,000 men’s steeplechase yesterday.

Earlier, Hulleza, the youngest among the long-distance running Hulleza siblings, snatched the gold in 5,000-meter, making it a triple golden treat for Himamaylan after veteran runner and Southeast Asian Games campaigner Julius Sermona booked the gold in 10,000-meter against a Kenyan rival.

Also making the city proud with a silver medal was Reymart Dela Cruz, who recently competed for Western Visayas in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa in Pangasinan.

Azkals to play minus
Etheridge in Malaysia

The Philippines national team will be banking on their reserve goalkeeper Roland Muller to keep a clean sheet against Malaysia in an international friendly on Friday.

The Asean Football Federation website quoted chief coach of the Philippines national team, Michael Weiss as saying that he was not perturbed by the absence of their first keeper Neil Etheridge who is facing a suspension by the Asian Football Confederation.

"We have a big pool of players, where we can swap players and give others a chance. We have a good team anyway. We will make the best of the situation and field in a good team," the German tactician said.
