BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Negros Oriental won the bidding against Negros Occidental and will host the Palarong Pambansa next year.

In his letter to Gov. Roel Degamo Wednesday, Department of Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the province has been selected to host the sports event.

Luistro said the decision took into consideration the presentations made and the report provided by the technical committee of DepEd officials and the Philippine Sports Commission.

Two young men drowned in Valencia, Negros Oriental, during All Saints Day Thursday and Mayor Enrique Gonzales Jr. said he is considering assigning a lifeguard at one of the town's tourist attractions.

Police identified the fatalities as Darryl Lim, 22, of Cavite City, and Anthony Patacsil, 20, of Baguio City, both said to be working for the Dumaguete Cathedral Credit Cooperative in Dumaguete City. The two were on an outing with two female companions when tragedy struck around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Gonzales said.

The group was swimming near the Casaroro waterfalls when one of the victims reportedly disappeared and the other went to his rescue but both of them failed to surface, reports said.

Col. Marion Sison, commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army based in Siaton, Negros Oriental, identified the fatality as Elmo Taburada, of Sitio Avocado, Brgy. Talalac, Sta. Catalina town, who sustained three gunshot wounds and died on the spot.

Investigation shows that Taburada was at a sari-sari store near his house at around 7 p.m. Thursday when three men came up and shot him at close range, with .45 caliber pistols, Sison said.
