IN SAGAY, CADIZ
NPC bets withdraw;
No big deal: Alvarez

BY
CARLA GOMEZ

The candidate for mayor of the Nationalist People’s Coalition and five others running for councilor of Sagay City, have filled affidavits withdrawing the certificates of candidacy they filed before the Commission on Elections.

Earlier, six NPC candidates for councilor in Cadiz City also withdrew their CoCs.

NPC gubernatorial candidate Genaro Alvarez Jr. yesterday said he was not aware of the withdrawal of CoCs, but anyone is free to do so, this is a free country.

Their withdrawals will not affect his candidacy, Alvarez said. “It is no big deal”, he added.

On October 24 Sagay mayoral candidate Rufino Katalbas filed an affidavit repudiating his nomination and acceptance as the official candidate of the NPC for the purpose of running as an independent bet, he said in his affidavit.

And after careful evaluation and consultation amongst his siblings and family members, he also decided to forego his intention to run for mayor and therefore was also withdrawing his CoC for the position as an independent candidate, he added in his affidavit dated October 25.

That leaves Romeo Espelita Apurado (Independent) and Rep. Alfredo Marañon III (United Negros Alliance) as the remaining contenders for mayor of Sagay City in next year’s polls.

The five who withdrew their candidacies for councilor on October 29 were Gregrmar Eras, Giovani Acdol, Arnel Jemilla, Leo Martin Ramos and Larry Lejato, Sagay Election Officer II Ryan Deldo said in a letter to Director IV Esmeraldo Ladra of the COMELEC Law Department.

Meanwhile, on October 19, Cadiz mayoral candidate Simeon Bacolado Jr. filed an affidavit of renunciation of withdrawal of candidacy, Cadiz Election Officer Revo Sorbito said in a letter sent to the COMELEC law department.

Also running for mayor of Cadiz are incumbent Patrick Escalante (UNA) and Manuel Garganera III (independent).

The six NPC candidates for councilor in Cadiz City, who had withdrawn their COCs on October 10 were Marites Pineda, Glenda Diola, Lanie Galleron, Rogelio Balandra, Augusto Tolosa and Enecito Labrador Jr., Sorbito also reported to the Law Department.*CPG
