Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano yesterday said he will study and possibly adopt the waste management program of Las Pinas City in Metro Manila, that provides income to its residents, and generate savings for the city.
Montelibano said he will ask the help of former Las Pinas Rep. Cynthia Villar, who has initiated projects in her hometown under the Villar Foundation, that helped uplift the lives of hundreds of families in the area.
“I am sure that we will learn a lot from them through the Lakbay Aral,” he added.
Villar, who attended the Cinco de Noviembre celebration in Silay City, yesterday, said she is more than willing to share the technology of the waste disposal, which convert wastes into organic fertilizers, and provides income to Las Pinas families.
Household waste disposal can be money-making, money-saving and job generating, Villar said. One of her pet projects is converting the kitchen wastes into fertilizer, which Villar said they are distributing to agricultural provinces in the country.
She said the establishment of composting facilities in the barangays is one way of maintaining a clean environment. The city government also saves a lot of money from hauling the garbage in the community, she added.
While many may have engaged in producing organic fertilizers, Villar said it may not be as extensive as what they have in Las Pinas, where, every barangay has a composting facility. * GPB back
