The allocation of P4.6 million for the expansion of the Handumanan Jail Annex in Bacolod City and the construction of a jail facility in Sipalay City Negros Occidental has been approved by the Office of the Directorate for Logistics of the National Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
Bacolod City District Jail Warden, Chief Insp. Gilbert Peremne, yesterday said the expansion project of the Handumanan Jail Annex at an estimated cost of P2 million is expected to start by the first quarter of next year.
Peremne said that when the expansion of the annex is finished, the detainees of the BJMP in Brgy. Taculing will be transferred there as the facility is expected to accommodate at least 1,000 prisoners.
He said female detainees will be transferred to the present BJMP site at the Bacolod City Police headquarters in Brgy. Taculing, from the Female Detention Dormitory at the Handumanan Jail Annex.
He also said it will be convenient for male prisoners to be transferred to a bigger facility because the BJMP Compound in Brgy. Taculing is too small and is now congested, he said.
The Office of the Directorate for Logistics of the National BJMP has also allotted P2.6 million for the construction of the Sipalay City jail facility, which will be built near the city’s Fire Bureau.
The Sipalay BJMP has no jail facility and is now using that of Sipalay police to house its inmates.*APN back
