Tigers beat Basecom
in overtime

Huminova Tigers needed an extra period to get away with an 111-108 victory and posted its first win against Basecom in the latest Class A match-up of the Fil-Sino All Asian Countertrade 3rd Conference Inter-Color Basketball Tournament at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.

The Tigers’ win was in contrast to the 122-27 blowout of Jast Enterprises against Organic Solutions, where St. John’s Institute senior Kib Montalbo scored 27 points for the winning team.

In the Tigers-Basecom tiff, the latter had the chance to nail the victory but bungled in the final minutes despite a nine-point lead with two minutes left.

Basecom’s offense sputtered in the face of a rally led by Ren Ren Lacson and Chibon Uy, capped by a trey from Lacson with six seconds left to force an overtime.

Lacson’s triple erased the three-point led built by Robbie Jalando-on, who scored on a layup and a free throw from Frederick Ong.

Riding high on the momentum in the extra period, the Tigers produced six points each from Eugene Tsai and Lacson to seal the victory.

Lacson finished with 29 points and got an efficient scoring support from Mark Binguan who tallied 24 points, Uy with 18, Frank Madrid added 11, Biboy Yap chipped in 10, Tsai finished with 8 points, and Nico Lopingco scored 7 points all in the fourth quarter.

Jalando-on and Pandoro finished with 28 points for Basecom, Hao had 14, Freddie Ong and Vincent Tan delivered 8 points each, and John Dustin Chua with 7 points.

Meanwhile, Jast Enterprises routed Organic Solutions 122-97 as teenage basketball sensation Kib Montalbo and Julius Teruel worked in tandem to deliver the points for Jast.

Despite the absence of top center Arnol Laureño, Organic Solutions fired eight triples in the first quarter, five of them courtesy of Bobby Yap, but the young Montalbo scored 20 points for Jas to force a deadlock at 29-all.

Yan Yan Dy and Ritchie Militante picked up the tempo for Jast in the second quarter for a 58-50 lead at the break.

Badong Eufre joined the scoring bandwagon in the third quarter as he canned three triples, while Teruel added nine more as Jast posted a commanding 92-69 advantage. John Montemayor hit three from the three-point area and Joseph Tiu added 7 to keep Organic in the game.

The fourth quarter was a three-point showdown between the two teams as Bobby Yap of Organic equaled Teruel’s output for four treys.

Eufre finished with 15 points, Militante made 12, Dy had 11, and Dr. Chico Coruña scored 10 points for Jast.

Organic by Yap with 29 points, Charlton Ong hit 12, John Montemayor , Tiu and Bol Manaloto fired 11 points each for Organic Solutions.*with a report from Stephen Tan
