KMU hits DOLE
over ‘intervention’

The Kilusang Mayo Uno slammed the labor secretary’s assumption of jurisdiction over a strike in a company distributing canned goods and household products in Bacolod City Sunday, a KMU press release said.

KMU condemned Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz for assuming jurisdiction over the eleven-day strike of Bacolod Columbia Marketing Inc. workers who are protesting company’s alleged recruitment of scabs and harassment to bust their newly-formed union, the press release said.

Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson, said the labor secretary’s power to assume jurisdiction is a violent instrument for crushing workers’ strikes and they condemn its use against the workers of Bacolod Columbia Marketing Inc., and against Filipino workers in general.

“Workers have every right to hold protests and strikes against capitalists who are busting their unions. The case of the workers of Bacolod Columbia Marketing Inc., is another illustration of how the Aquino government is violating workers’ rights and conniving with capitalists to bust unions,” he added.*
