Renew, or surrender, guns
with expired licenses: PNP

The provincial Firearms and Explosives Office is racing against time in its campaign for the renewal of 7,494 guns with expired licenses, now possessed by individuals in Negros Occidental.

Of the 11,408 firearms with licenses and recorded at FEO since 1998, only 319 owners have applied for renewal so far, records of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office show.

Supt. Jefferson Descallar, NOPPO Operations Branch, however, said other licensed firearm holders may have applied for renewal directly to the FEO regional office, or at Camp Crame.

After the re-launch of the war against loose firearms, the Police Regional Office 6 reported the renewal of 1,001 firearm licenses in Western Visayas, in the past two months.

Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz, regional police director is enjoining gun owners to decide soon their option, whether to renew licenses or surrender their guns, in case they wish to terminate their possession.

The PRO6 reported that as of August this year, there are 33,068 licensed guns with expired licenses in Western Visayas.

A gun with an expired license is considered unlicensed, and its possession is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment, under Presidential Decree 1866 as amended by Republic Act 8294,

The firearm is also subject to confiscation since the license is deemed revoked, Cruz said.

“Task Force Armas,” headed by Senior Supt. Wesley Barayuga, deputy regional director for Operations, was recently activated in Western Visayas to run after owners of loose firearms.

Members of the task force have started their house-to-house visitations to remind owners of loose firearms and offer them assistance.

The campaign against loose firearms and those with expired licenses is part of the security preparations of the PNP, for the 2013 elections.*GPB
