Escalante boxers dominate
Gov. Marañon Boxing cup

Boxers from Escalante City helped the 1st District collect eight gold and seven silver medals to capture the overall championship in the 3rd Negros First. Gov. Alfredo G. Marañon Jr. Boxing Cup held over the weekend in Silay City Covered Court.

Figuring prominently in the list of gold medalists from Escalante were female boxers Feedielyn Mantalaya, Sarah Jean and Sheila Mae Mag-osara, who prevailed over their opponents from the different areas in the province.

Mantalaya beat Socorro Talamante of Himamaylan City in the 36 kgs., Sarah Jean outclassed Renalyn Soberano of Murcia in the 48kgs., and Sheila Mae won over Rose Rosebelle Laurilla of Murcia in 50kgs. to carry the boxing team from the 1st District to the top of the tournament.

Junto topscored for WNU
in q’finals defeat vs. SJI

Jude Fel Junto of defending champion West Negros University junior Mustangs scored 18 points but they were enough to stop the St. John’s Institute from clinching the first semifinals slot in the NOPSSCEA Juniors Basketball Tournament at the WNU Gym over the weekend.

The Johnians advanced leads the Bracket A with a 2-0 card after defeating WNU, 89-78, and University of Negros Occidental, 64-73.

UNO-R and WNU will dispute the last semis spot next Saturday, while USLS-IS is already out of contention at 0-2.
