Anti-coal, mining
caravan kicks off

The No to Mining and Coal Alliance composed of various sectors in Northern Negros, is holding a three-day people’s caravan starting today to protest against mining activities in Sagay City and the planned installation of the Coal-Fired Power Plant in Cadiz City, their press release said.

“We strongly oppose the Silica Mining in Brgy. Baviera, Sagay City, and the Magnetite–Black Sand Mining disguised as dredging in Brgy. Old Sagay, Sagay City,” the press release said.

The International Fact Finding and Environmental Mission concluded that the mining activities in Sagay city reveals the detrimental impact on the livelihood of the people living near the vicinity of the mining operations, it said.

In the coastal areas of Sagay, 120 families have been relocated to clear the area for mining activities. Fourteen other families in Sitio Looc who depended on collecting sea shells for livelihood were also dislocated, it claimed.

In Baviera village, Sagay City, residents also complained against the negative impact of Silica Mining, the press release added.*
