The City Cooperative and Livelihood Development Office of Bacolod City was adjudged the Most Outstanding CCLDO in Western Visayas during a recent national convention in Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said yesterday.
Leonardia recalled that the CCLDO of Bacolod City was created during his first term as mayor in 1995 to 1998.
“I am very happy and proud that it has gone a long way and has become a model in the region. It has been consistently recognized every year, like other offices in the city government,” he said.
Leonardia said the committee must have taken note of all the concrete achievements of the office, particularly in reaching out to the grassroots, because members of its staff go to the barangays to conduct livelihood trainings.
He said they are pursuing this on the principle that “If you give a man a fish, he will feed himself for a day, but if you teach him how to fish, he will feed himself for the rest of his life.”
Leonardia said they are teaching people how to have livelihoods so they will be self-sufficient.
CCLDO head Brenda Burdeus said that among the factors that helped them win the award are the legislations passed by the City Council like resolutions and ordinances to strengthen the cooperative, and the financial assistance extended by the city government, as well as all the programs they have implemented.
Meanwhile, the Bacolod Showroom, Pasalubong and Gift Shop operated by the CCLDO at the Bacolod City Hall generated about P300,000 in just 15 days during highlights of the MassKara Festival.
Ruby Osorio, its marketing and promotions officer, said that when the showroom opened July, they generated only about P35,000 in sales but profits doubled in August. She said that in its five months of operation, sales continued to increase every month.
The showroom is home to the 72 local producers from the city and their products are native bags, accessories, masks, native products, furniture, home decorations and furnishings, lamp shades and vases.
It also serves as a one-stop shop for tourists as it displays food products from Bacolod producers, she added.*CGS back
