Man meted 40 years
for death of student

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A resident of Sibulan, Negros Oriental, was sentenced to a maximum of 40 years imprisonment for the fatal shooting of a student and the wounding of his brother in Dumaguete City in 2008.

In his order promulgated Friday, Regional Trial Court Branch 34 presiding Judge Rosendo Bandal Jr. also required Allan Diputado, 42, to indemnify the family of Jason Pajunar P90,000 for his untimely death, P40,000 as actual damages for the funeral expenses incurred, and P50,000 as moral damages.

Court records show that Diputado, along with Gem Go and two John Does, were accused of acting and conspiring together, with intent to kill Pajunar with treachery.

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

An adult Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate), one of the endangered sea turtle species in the world, died Sunday of still unknown cause at its captive breeding site in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental.

Environmentalists Steve de Neef said he was informed about this Sunday. Christina Pajang of the Large Marine Vertebrates Project in the Philippines, under the nongovernment organization Physalus, said the turtle has been on medication since Wednesday.

She said she went to the Oceanarium in Zamboanguita to administer the first dose of antibiotics and she taught the facility caretaker the daily dosage for an eight-day regimen. The turtle was also given injectable fluids, or saline chloride, and antibiotics.

Church assured of lot
for shelter project

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has reassured Catholic Church leaders that the Dumaguete City government will acquire another piece of land for additional housing units for victims of tropical storm “Sendong”.

The assurance came when the Diocese of Dumaguete, through its Social Action Team, turned over to beneficiaries the final 30 houses constructed at the Caritas Shelter Village in Brgy. Bajumpandan, Dumaguete Friday.

The joint project of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action, Caritas, the Diocese of Dumaguete-Social Action Center, and the city, covers 150 housing units, with 58 shelters already turned over, and the rest to be constructed once another lot is available.
