Lopue’s Table Tennis Association president Leonito Lopue lauded his players for their impressive performance in the Batang Pinoy Visayas eliminations, held last week in Tacloban City, Leyte.
The team captured the championship in the girls’ singles and mixed doubles, finished first runner-up in the mixed doubles and boys’ singles, and second runner-up in the girls’ singles.
Current Philippine No. 1 junior player Emy Rose Dael, hoisting the banner of Bacolod City, won the gold in the girls’ singles event by beating Thelly Ann Jungco of Antique in straight sets (3-0), while teammate Ann Gella Borbon took home the bronze in the same event.
The team won a gold and a silver in the mixed doubles category as it was an all-Bacolod showdown in the finals with Francis Garganian and Borbon facing teammates John Michael Castro and Dael. Garganian and Borbon won in straight sets (3-0).
In the boys’ singles, Janley Manzanares of LOPTTA managed to hold on to a silver finish after a tightly contested final event won by Jan Nayre of Cebu.
Batang Pinoy was conceptualized as a national grassroots sports development program for young athletes 15 years old and below as a selection base for potential high performing players as specified in Executive Order No. 44, otherwise known as the Philippine National Youth Games.*NAB
