‘Over P8.5 million
allotted for SPES’

The Department of Labor and Employment in Negros Occidental has allocated P8,596,000 for the Special Program for the Employment of Students for 2013, Ma. Victoria Mondragon, DOLE provincial director, said yesterday.

Mondragon said they will have a pledging session today at the Sugar Workers Development Center with 60 partner-employers from the local government units, private establishments, and private and public schools in Negros.

DOLE has 20 partner-LGUs, 23 private establishments, and 17 public and private schools that are expected to employ about 4,000 students, she said.

Under the program students will work from 22 to 52 days, depending on the agreement with the employer. It is open to high school and college students and for the out of school youth, Mondragon said.

Compensation will depend on the salary rates of the employers, Mondragon said adding that 40 percent of their salaries will be shouldered by DOLE, while employers will pay 60 percent.

Last year, DOLE-Negros allocated P7.9 million for SPES that benefited 3,219 students, she said.

SPES is a bridging employment program of DOLE for students to earn extra income they can use for their education, and at the same time make them productive during summer breaks, she added. *LTG
