P2M Kabankalan robbery
suspect nabbed in Manila

The last suspect in the recent P2 million armed robbery and murder incidents in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, has finally been apprehended in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, for illegal possession of firearms, police said.

Supt. Calixto Mabugat, Kabankalan police chief, yesterday identified the arrested suspect as Richard Gonzales, “alias Pangga”, who has two pending arrest warrants in Negros Occidental, for robbery with homicide, and violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Anti-Drugs Act of 2002.

Gonzales and his companion, Bonifacio Galagate Jr., were denied bail in the robbery with homicide charges filed against them, for reportedly robbing at gunpoint Cheryll Begota, an employee of a sugar trader of P2 million, and shooting dead her escort , Celso Cari-an, in Kabankalan City on Feb. 15 this year.

Galagate was arrested by the police earlier in Kabankalan City for illegal possession of firearms and alleged possession of prohibited drugs, police records show.

Gonzales, who also used the name “Brix Monteverde”, ranks sixth in the list of 10 most-wanted persons in Parañaque, police records also show.

Mabugat said the Parañaque police are verifying reports that Gonzales was also involved in the Robinson Galleria East mall hold-up in July, and is a member of the Ozamis robbery hold-up group.

Investigation by the Kabankalan Police showed that Gonzales fled to Manila in May after the arrest of Galagate.

Mabugat said they are now considering the robbery-slay as “case closed”, with the arrest of Gonzales and Galagate.*GPB

‘Jobless man
commits suicide’

A jobless man allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the sea at the Bacolod City reclamation area at about 8 a.m. Sunday.

Supt. Santiago Rapiz of the Bacolod City Police Office said the body of Zaidy Espinosa, 29, of Raymond Street, Brgy. Singcang-Airport, Bacolod, was fished out at about 5 a.m. yesterday.

Fisherman Ireneo Javellana, 40, of Purok Mambuloc, Brgy. 10, and mall employee Ryan Oceña told the police that they saw Espinosa tying his leg with a rope and the other end to a bag before jumping.

Javellana and Oceña said they immediately reported the incident to the police, and this prompted the Philippine Coast Guard to conduct a search and rescue/retrieval operation but failed to recover Espinosa’s body as the water in area is about 30 meters deep, Rapiz added.

Station 1 commander, Chief Insp. Adonis Rosales, said they have ruled out foul play in the death of Espinosa, whose remains are now state at the Holy Angels Funeral Memorial Chapels at Cuadra Street, Bacolod City.*APN
