Recoletos paddlers keep title

The University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos men and women’s table tennis teams captured the championship in this year’s edition of the NOPSSCEA competition with a dominating performance over the weekend at the Lopue’s San Sebastian Department Store, Annex Building in Bacolod City.

It was the 5th consecutive NOPSSCEA crown for the George Jimenez-mentored UNO-R women’s team, while the men’s squad successfully defended the title it won last year.

The members of the UNO-R men’s champion team, who are also active members of Lopue’s Table Tennis Association, are John Paul Gubaton, Mark Lisas, Joey Bana-ag and Elbert Salandaguit, while the women’s team is composed of Rose Jean Fadol, Sheryl Otanez, Benjielyn Dayap, Meryll Rojo, Ivy Espiritu and Jerelyn Concepcion.

Gubaton and Fadol, who won all their singles matches, are members of the Philippine Juniors team.

In the men’s team final, UNO-R prevailed against rival USLS, 3-1.

Down 0-1, Gubaton leveled the score by beating Rhomar Dasilao of USLS in straight sets, 3-0.

In the crucial doubles match for the lead, it was a nail-biting match-up between UNO-R’s Bana-ag and Salandaguit against USLS Raganas and Villanueva, with the former prevailing with a score of 3-1.

Up 2-1 and with the chance to seal the championship, Gubaton never looked back as he beat USLS mainstay Justin Daniel 3-1. JBLCF settled for third place.

In the distaff side, UNO-R edged USLS (3-1) in the final match to capture the crown while Riverside College settled for third.

Fadol started the bid by disposing Erla Gidaya of USLS in straight sets (3-0), while teammate Sheryl Otanez pulled off a come-from behind victory against Cherrie Tiongco, 3-2.

USLS had its break with a win in the doubles match to trail 1-2 in team standing but Fadol finished the job by prevailing over against Tiongco in the decider, 3-2.*NAB
