Farm overseer killed,
gunmen take payroll

BY ADRIAN NEMES III
Two armed men on a motorcycle shot dead an hacienda overseer and took from him an undetermined amount of cash intended for salaries of farm laborers at about 6 p.m. Sunday in Murcia town, Negros Occidental.

Police identified the victim as Eldefonso Cabatuan Romero, 51, overseer of Hacienda Rio in Brgy. Abo-Abo, Murcia.

Romero succumbed to four gunshot wounds on his left side while being treated at the Bacolod City Adventist Medical Center, SPO3 Ronilo Mercurio, Murcia Police Administrative officer said, quoting investigator SPO1 Danilo Pastro.

Romero’s wife, whose name the police withheld for security reasons, told the police that they were on board their car about 1.5 kilometers from the hacienda when the suspects blocked their way and asked them to alight.

She said one of the suspects shot her husband, but the gun did not fire prompting the other suspect to draw his firearm and shoot him several times.

The wife added that because of fear and thinking they were being robbed, she gave the money to the suspects, who fled immediately on their motorcycle.

Four slugs and six empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol were recovered from the crime scene, the police said.

Mercurio said they already have suspects, who they believe are also responsible for other robbery incidents in Murcia, but could not give more details while the investigation of the case is ongoing.*APN
