‘No party alliance in NegOr’
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE & JUDY F. PARTLOW

Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District), provincial chair of the Nationalist Peoples Coalition, said yesterday there will be no alliance of political parties in Negros Oriental, that this is happening in other parts of the country.

He said it is impossible to have a coalition in the province, with three candidates vying for governor in the May 13, 2013 elections. He was referring to Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1st District), of the ruling Liberal Party, who filed her certificate of candidacy Monday, against incumbent Gov. Roel Degamo of the PDP-Laban, and former Finance Secretary Margarito Teves of the NPC.

Arnaiz, who led the oath-taking rites of NPC candidates in Basay, Bayawan, Sta. Catalina, Siaton, Zamboanguita and Valencia, said the party is becoming a political force to reckon with.

He said there are about 60 congressmen who are NPC members.

Meanwhile, provincial election supervisor Eddie Aba is appealing to candidates to file their COCs early to avoid the last minute rush on Friday and prevent possible disqualification due to lack of requirements.

He said that, unlike in past elections when the period of filing of COCs was lengthier, the Commission of Elections will be very strict with the requirements and will not extend the filing period beyond October 5.

The Comelec NegOr is also set to convene the Joint Peace Security Coordinating Council after Oct. 5 despite the absence of a resolution from its central office.

Aba said that as early as next week, the Council should already be activated to comply with its mandate of ensuring a peaceful and orderly election.

He said the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines are monitoring the presence of private armed groups in the province to minimize, if not totally prevent, election-related incidents.*JG/JFP
