Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District), provincial chair of the Nationalist Peoples Coalition, said yesterday there will be no alliance of political parties in Negros Oriental, that this is happening in other parts of the country.

He said it is impossible to have a coalition in the province, with three candidates vying for governor in the May 13, 2013 elections. He was referring to Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1st District), of the ruling Liberal Party, who filed her certificate of candidacy Monday, against incumbent Gov. Roel Degamo of the PDP-Laban, and former Finance Secretary Margarito Teves of the NPC.

Arnaiz, who led the oath-taking rites of NPC candidates in Basay, Bayawan, Sta. Catalina, Siaton, Zamboanguita and Valencia, said the party is becoming a political force to reckon with.

Increase in Dumaguete
market income pushed

In a move to increase the income of the public market, the Dumaguete City government has adopted measures that include reduction in personnel from 250 to 119, construction of a deep well, and establishment of a state-of-the-art waterless comfort room, that is already earning an average of P100,000 a month for the city.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said that, based on records, the market operation incurred almost P4 million in deficit in 2010, but this was reduced in 2011 and 2012. He said that he does not want to blame anybody, but records will show that he has asked the Sangguniang Panlungsod to enact an ordinance that will increase the market stall fees.

Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, police filed illegal drug possession charges Monday against the driver of a car that fell into a roadside ditch at around 8 a.m. Sunday in Tabla, Tanjay.

Supt. Ernesto Tagle, Tanjay police chief, identified the suspect as Paul Montenegro, 44, of Bais City, Negros Oriental, who is now detained at the police station after his discharge from the Silliman University Medical Center in Dumaguete City.

Preliminary investigation was held at the City Fiscal’s Office yesterday afternoon, but Tagle said he believes that the complaint against Montenegro could be dismissed, as a concerned citizen, who was among those who responded to the car accident, declined to stand as police witness.
