Talisay cops attend
enhancement training

The 43 policemen assigned at the Talisay City Police Station in Negros Occidental are not available for law enforcement and peacekeeping operations for more than a week at least, starting October 1.

Senior Supt. Milko Lirazan, officer-in-charge of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, said the entire Talisay police force, including the police chief, was temporarily replaced by policemen from other stations and maneuver units, to avoid a vacuum in the delivery of basic police service in the city.

Senior Insp. John Ganzon was temporarily assigned as Talisay police officer-in-charge, replacing Supt. Joseph Thomas Martir, who, with 42 other policemen under his command, are attending the week-long Unit Enhancement Training.

Lirazan said the 43 police officers will undergo “back to basic training”, that includes the PNP Moral Upliftment Program and other related operational enhancement courses.

The training, that has already been attended by policemen assigned in Silay, Victorias, Sagay and Manapla, all in Negros Occidental, was facilitated by the Soroptimist-International, represented by Carmen Flor.

Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz, regional police director of Western Visayas, who attended the opening of the Unit Enhancement Training Monday at the third floor of Talisay City Hall, said the training will further improve cohesiveness and unity of members of a police unit.

Napolcom Commissioner Luisito Palmera, who spoke at the activity, lauded the continued effort of Soroptimist-International to help the police force in Negros Occidental. “It will be a big help for the law enforcers,” he added.

Palmera also said that Napolcom will not hesitate to dismiss policemen who are found to be engaged in illegal activities.

Presidential Management Staff Assistant Secretary Jose Wilfrido Oca, who also attended the opening of the Unit Enhancement Training, said in an interview with ABS-CBN, that “Law enforcers are supposed to catch criminals, not to catch innocent people to get money from them”.*GPB

The complainants, who requested anonymity, aged 18 and 23 years old, are from Escalante City, Negros Occidental. They said they brought the women to the Standard Lodging House Sunday night, but when they woke up at about 1:40 a.m., they discovered the suspects and the cellular phones gone.

HOLD-UP, ARREST

Mark Angelou Fermin, 22, of Regent Pearl, Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod City, told the police that two armed men held him up at gunpoint at Araneta Street, Bacolod, at about 1 a.m. Monday. He said the suspects took his wristwatch valued at P2,900, a cellular phone worth P3,200, and wallet, kicked him, and then fled on a motorcycle.

Meanwhile, Edgardo Castroverde, 43, of Purok Marapara, Brgy. Bata, Bacolod was nabbed by Station 3 cops at about 10 p.m. Monday in the barangay, on the strength of an arrest warrant for murder, issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Renato Muñez, who denied him bail.
