SJI coach seeks clarifications
on juniors cagefest final format

St. John’s Institute high school basketball head coach Dexter Dy expressed concern over the way the NOPSSCEA 2012 tournament is being run, saying the rules are vague on how the team will be seeded in the quarterfinals.

With 26 teams joining the juniors competition, Dy said they were informed that there will be four brackets with at least six teams each, with the top two teams in each bracket advancing to the quarterfinals after the eliminations.

What confuses him, Dy said, was the announced of tournament commissioner Renato Bravo that the last eight teams will be divided into two brackets through drawing of lots.

“This would be very unfair since each team labored hard to be in the top two of their bracket,” Dy pointed out, adding that the worst-case scenario would be all No. 1 teams will land in one bracket and lose their chance of advancing to the semifinals.

He said this issue should be resolved as soon as possible since the competition has already begun and each team are also bidding for the championship.

The SJI Falcons finished first runner-up last year against the WNU Mustangs, who went on to represent Western Visayas in the Palarong Pambansa and finished second runner-up.

Dy also appealed to the NOPSSCEA Board to encourage the tournament commissioner, or at least his deputy, to be present during the games to supervise the competition.

He said that during the September 22 game between Jack ‘n Jill and SJI, the referees tried to overlook the rules and even told them that “It is a sure win for SJI”.

Although SJI won, 148-27, Dy said referees should treat all games seriously and follow the rules.*NAB
