The Commission on Elections in Dumaguete City said it had received only five certificates of candidacy for sanggunian members as of 12 noon yesterday.

City COMELEC officer Carmencita Cañares said they are Lani Ramon, owner of Bread Camp; William Aranas, a retired teacher of the Negros Oriental State University; incumbent councilor Nilo Sayson, Joel Obar and Board Member Saleto Erames.

Cañares reminded the candidates that the commission will no longer entertain them beyond 5 p.m. today, the last day for filing of COCs of those who want to run for any elective post in the May 13, 2013 polls.

There are 66,397 registered voters in Dumaguete City, against more than 69,000 in the 2010 elections, the COMELEC said at the recent Election Review Board meeting.

Cañares said the number of voters decreased because the names of those who failed to vote in the two successive elections had been deleted from the COMELEC master-list of voters.

But she said she is hopeful that the number will still increase with the resumption in the registration of voters next week, and the list-up at the Quezon Park from October 24 to 31.

Negros Oriental, meanwhile, has 698,337 registered voters as of the August 22 ERB review, with 226,377 in the first district, 262,445 in the second district and 209,515 in the third district.

The areas with large voting population include Dumaguete City with 66,397, Bayawan City - 51,567, Bais City - 51,063, Guihulngan - 61,927, Tanjay - 42,061, Siaton and Sta. Catalina, with more than 39,000 each, and Mabinay with 34,124 registered voters.*JG
