PVO: More calves available for
Neg. Occ. dairy program

The pregnant Holstein Freisan cattle from the National Dairy Authority recently gave birth to 22 calves raised at the Sagay Breeding Center that will augment the dairy development program of Negros Occidental, Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Renante Decena, said yesterday.

Decena said NDA has given the province 100 heads of pregnant cattle since 2010 after qualifying for the local government unit multiplier breeder farm. NDA provides the milk producing animals and the recipient LGU will raise and disperse them to their qualified and accredited beneficiaries.

He said the province has eight years to pay for the animals, not in cash, but in kind, and the dairy development fee of P100 per head every month. The payment will be for first born calves and heifers, he also said.

The multiplier breeder scheme allows the province to distribute the new born animals to qualified raisers, he said. The beneficiaries will then grow the animals for reproduction and milk production, Decena added.

Meanwhile, Decena said Sagay Breeding Center is now producing an average of 11 liters of milk daily from about 300 milk-producing cattle, adding that he milk is used in the feeding programs of the province. *LTG
