Bacolod, Chamber to get
‘Gawad Kalasag’ awards

The Bacolod City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council and the Bacolod Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade will receive the “Gawad Kalasag” awards, in recognition of their exemplary achievements in the field of disaster management.

Records of the Office of Civil Defense 6 show that the Bacolod DRRMC headed by Joemarie Vargas ranked third among the best CDRRM Council nationwide.

In 2009, the Bacolod CDRRMC also won the same award at the national level.

The Bacolod Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade ranked first as best private organization in disaster management. Its representative will receive the award today at Camp Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

Bacolod was among the top three finalists at the national level, in the highly urbanized category, OCD 6 records also showed.

Other finalists are Guimaras, that ranked second as best Provincial Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council, San Jose de Buenavista and Balete towns in Aklan – Best Municipal DRRMC, Brgy. Sipitan in Guimbal, Iloilo as best Barangay DRRMC category, Iloilo Emergency Responders- Best Government Emergency Response Management, Santa Rosa Elementary School in Guimbail, Iloilo- Best School DRRMC, while the Guimaras Provincial Hospital ranked second as Best Hospital.

OCD 6 Director Rosario Cabrera said Region 6 finalists in Gawad Kalasag awards showcases of Western Visayas’ initiatives in disaster risk reduction and management.
Cabrera said the finalists, chosen from more than 30 entries, represented partners and sectors of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) in implementing disaster preparedness law and ordinances.*GPB
