1,181 dengue cases, 6
deaths noted in Neg. Or.
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Dengue cases in Negros Oriental continue to rise in the third quarter of 2012, with 1,181 admissions and six deaths recorded in three hospitals in the province by the Department of Health Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit 7.

RESU-7 records show that from January 1 to September 30, cases increased by 244 percent compared to the same period last year, or 343 dengue admissions with zero fatality.

The report covered only the admission cases of the Holy Child Hospital, the Silliman University Medical Center, and the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, all in Dumaguete City. The RESU is still collating data from district hospitals in the province.

Dumaguete still has the highest number of dengue cases at 515, followed by Bayawan City – 84, Siaton – 63, Tanjay City – 62, Sibulan – 55, Valencia – 44, Dauin – 42, Bais City – 41, Basay and Zamboanguita with 32 cases each, and Canlaon City with the lowest number at four cases.

Health officials have reiterated the importance of the 4S strategy to combat dengue: Search and destroy the breeding grounds of mosquitoes, Seek early consultation and treatment, adopt Self-protection measures like the use of insect repellant lotion, and Say no to indiscriminate fogging.*JFP
