The Department of Trade and Industry in Negros Occidental yesterday conducted a consumer education seminar for consumer organizations, barangay captains, and buying public at the Bacolod City Government Center as part of the Consumer Welfare Month celebration.
MaximoRavena, DTI, Consumers Welfare and Trade Division chief, said the seminar was aimed at increasing vigilance among the consuming public, particularly those in the grassroots level.
He said fair trade laws and violations are unnoticed at the barangay level, so consumer education is very important to make people aware of their rights and to revitalize consumer organizations.
The “Gabay sa MamimilingTaga Barangay Project” also aims to foster cooperation among various sectors to promote consumerism and to educate further the roles of consumer organization in assisting the public, Ravena said.
The Bacolod Consumer Welfare Desk and the Bacolod City National High School Consumer Club also participated in the education seminar, he added.
The CWM is observed nationwide pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 1098 signed by then president Fidel Ramos, Ravena also said.*LTG
