380 HS students
granted scholarships
BY MARICAR ARANAS

A total of 380 scholars from four secondary schools in Valencia town received allowances of P5,000 each from the Energy Development Corporation in Negros Oriental.

Valencia Mayor Enrique Gonzalez said the program is part of the company’s social commitment and contribution to the educational development of the community, and for being the host town of the geothermal energy plant in southern Negros.

The scholars are students of the Valencia National High School, Balugo NHS, Pulangbato NHS and the San Pedro Academy–Recoletos. They are required to maintain an 85 percent general average to retain the scholarship and monetary assistance.

The presentation of checks was attended by their parents, town officials, EDC Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field manager, Dwight Maxino, and Corporate Social Responsibility manager, Noreen Bautista.

Gonzales said the scholarship is a great advantage for the scholars, and should inspire them to complete their studies. Those with excellent academic performance can also apply for scholarships at the University of the Philippines, through the EDC assistance. He said four scholars are presently enrolled in UP Diliman, Iloilo and Cebu.

He said Valencia also allotted a P2 million college scholarship grant to provide continuity to the education program for the scholars.

The LGU gives P5,000 as allowance to students with a general average of 85 percent, and P15,000 each for those with 90 percent grades. The town has 200 scholars now enrolled at the Negros Oriental State University and Foundation University, both of Dumaguete City.*MA
