The 50th National Executive Board Meeting of the League of Cities of the Philippines will push through on October 19 to 21 at the L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City, during the culminating days of the MassKara Festival, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.
Leonardia, who is the executive vice president of the LCP, said the mayors will start coming in on October 19 and on the first night they will be hosted at the Bacolod City Government Center and will be later brought to the Electric MassKara at the Tourism Strip at Lacson Street.
He said the meeting proper will be on October 21 and the speakers, among others, are Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas and Budget and Management Secretary Florencio Abad.
Leonardia said their latest information is that U.S. Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. may not be able to make it. “I do not think they would want the U.S. Ambassador displayed at a time like this, when the U.S. Embassies are being very well guarded,” he said.
Among the mayors who have signified that they are coming are Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn, LCP national president and San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, and LCP secretary general and Alaminos Mayor Hernani Braganza, he said.
Leonardia said they are expecting 30 to 40 mayors to attend the meeting.
The mayors will hold dialogs with representatives of the Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-Ibig), and the Canadian International Development Agency, among others.
They decided to hold the meeting in Negros Island which has probably the most number of city mayors.
There are about 13 city mayors in Negros Occidental and five in Negros Oriental, or a total of 17 out of the 138 city mayors in the country.*CGS back
