Mardi Gras fantasy costume
winners named

A student of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos won the grand prize in the MassKara Festival Nights of Mardi Gras fantasy costume Thursday night at the Bacolod public plaza, a press release from organizers said.

Ismael Jallorina, 23, a second year Civil Engineering student, won P15,000, for his octopus-inspired fantasy costume modeled by his cousin, Nochie Jallorina. A resident of Brgy. Vilamonte, Bacolod City, Jallorina said it took him a week to create the costume from indigenous materials, like rubber slice, fruit seeds, plastic spoons, coffee beans, and corn stalks.

Winning P10,000 as first runner-up was Ed-je Simbajon, with his “Aqua Man” creation, while Owin Presenete was second runner-up and received P5,000 with his peacock-inspired metallic costume. The rest of the top 10 finalists received P1,000 each, the press release also said.

Fifty participants wearing fantasy costumes and masks sashayed on stage and romped around the Bacolod plaza on the first night of the Mardi Gras Oct. 9. They were trimmed down to 30 for the second and third performance nights.

The contest was judged by streetdance committee chair Rudy Reveche, Harold Limbo and Marigold Tupaz of ABS-CBN Bacolod, and Adrian Torres. It was a partnership between ABS-CBN, MOR 101.5 and the Silver MassKara Festival Organization, the press release added.*
