New voters increasing,
more machines arrive
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The Commission on Elections yesterday beefed up the voters registration capability of its personnel in Negros Occidental with the number of registrants expected to increase as the deadline on October 31 nears.

Twenty-two more Voters Registration Machines sent by the COMELEC head office in Manila arrived in Negros Occidental yesterday, Elections Provincial Supervisor Jessie Suarez said.

These are in addition to the 40 machines already distributed throughout Negros Occidental, he said.

Suarez said that, of the 22 new machines, the COMELEC office in Bacolod will get four, while the cities of Bago, Cadiz, San Carlos, Silay and Sagay will get two each.

Hinigaran, Binalbagan, Murcia, Escalante, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, La Carlota and Victorias will receive one machine each, he added.

A Voter Registration Machine is a desktop computer, with a digital camera, fingerprint scanner and a signature pad attached to it that enables the capture of a voter’s biometrics.

Suarez said the number of voter registrants going to COMELEC offices throughout the province have increased since the resumption of registration on October 6, Suarez said.

There have been reports of some candidates hauling residents to COMELEC offices to register.*CPG
