Agri, fisheries census set

The National Statistics Office in Negros Oriental will conduct a Census on Agriculture and Fishery in February 2013, a government press release said.

NSO NegOr statistician officer, Ariel Fortuito, said the census will need more than one thousand enumerators to conduct house to house visits provincewide to gather data on the agriculture and fisheries sectors.

Conducted every 10 years, the CAF is a large-scale government undertaking that inventories the country’s agricultural and fishery resources, and information on the kinds of crops planted, livestock and poultry raised, species cultured in aqua-farms, and fishing activities. The data will be useful to investors, farmers, and fishermen in planning the quantity and types of commodities to be produced, the press release said.

In the 2002 census, Central Visayas accounted for the highest number of farms, or 430,000 farms covering 522.4 thousand hectares, with an average size of 1.21 hectares per farm.

Negros Oriental was second only to Cebu in the number of farms, but it had the largest total farm area of 228, 447 hectares, or about 44 percent of the region’s land area, the NSO added.

For the 2013 census, the distribution and structural characteristics of agriculture and fishery sectors will also be determined because these will serve as the framework for the country’s development programs, the press release also said.

The NSO is also asking the support of barangay officials in the ongoing survey for Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture.

Fortuito said that field interviewers should be assisted by local officials by informing residents to make themselves available on the scheduled date of the survey.

Under the Local Government Code, the barangay secretary is tasked to keep an updated record of all residents, so the secretary has to supervise the field interviewers so that the information collected is accurate.

Data generation started September 17 and will end November 7, the press release said.*
