Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño turned over P300,000 worth of scholarship assistance to 60 college students in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental, Saturday at the Governor’s Hall, Provincial Capitol Building in Bacolod City.
Casiño said the assistance was exclusively for Negros Occidental beneficiaries selected by the local chapter leaders. Each student received P5,000 from the Priority Development Assistance Fund of Bayan Muna, he said.
He said BM has no strict requirements for the assistance. It is given to students faced with financial difficulty in meeting tuition fees.
He also said the scholarship is part of the program of the partylist since 2001.
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., who gave message to the students, said the biggest social equalizer is to give poor and deserving students quality education.
“For me, the easiest and the best way to solve poverty is to give the children of the less fortunate a good quality education,” Marañon said.
He also congratulated the parents of the students selected for the scholarship and encouraged them to study hard, take an extra mile in their studies, and maintain their grades.
The governor also reminded them to think of their future and not to forget to pray.
PARTYLIST
Meanwhile, Casiño said he is confident that their partylist will not be delisted and disqualified by the Commission on Elections for the midterm elections next year.
Bayan Muna represents the marginalized sectors and their track record shows that they fight for the rights and privileges of the poor, he said.
But the purging of the partylist list is long overdue because some are bogus, some have nominees who not represent the groups they represent, and some are used as backdoors for political dynasties, he added.
Now in his last term as representative, Casiño is running for senator as an independent candidate.
He is also pushing for the increase of P7,000 to the pensioners of the Social Security System. This is one of the bills that Bayan Muna is sponsoring in the House of Congress, he said.
Meanwhile, Casiño has also filed the House Bill 6613 or the Internet Freedom Bill to repeal the repressive provisions of the Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
“We hope that the Congress will immediately act on the measures. There is still the Temporary Restraining Order from the Supreme Court,” Casiño said.*LTG back
